Bill Holmes, P.E. has been called the "Father of Energy Monitoring"
He developed and has used The AutoPilot Energy Monitoring System to Produce Energy Savings in All Types of Existing Buildings for More Than 30 Years
Bill has been in the Energy Conservation field since it began following the Oil Embargo of the early 70’s. Through the extensive use of instrumentation, his projects have resulted in savings of 30-50% and more in facilities ranging from schools, office buildings, shopping malls and sports complexes to very large industrial plants owned by General Electric, RCA, Alcoa, DuPont, Honda, Rexnord, GenCorp, Mitsui, Public Service Indiana, Kosmos, Hoover, Golden Casting, Mariah Meat Packing & many more.
In the late 1970's Bill developed an approach very similar to that now being called retro-commissioning. By not simply monitoring energy consumption but also system performance and efficiency, he was able to create huge savings by essentially tuning up the existing energy systems in existing buildings.
The payback on the investment in the Energy Monitoring System was, in every case, weeks or months.

Energy Consulting - See the Services page for details.
After more than 30 years of instrumenting energy systems in buildings, Bill knows more about how buildings actually use energy than anyone else in the country. He has been a practicing engineer and mechanical systems designer, Purdue Professor teaching thermodynamics, power systems and energy conservation, and energy engineer responsible for energy conservation, system operation, control and maintenance in multiple facilities. For many years he reviewed actual monitored data every day from every system in every building where the AutoPilot Monitoring System was installed.
Bill taught his approach in the Energy Conservation program in the Department of Continuing Studies at the University of Wisconsin, the premier program in the nation for training practicing engineers to reduce energy usage and costs.
He is a regular contributor to Sustainable Plant Journal, has written articles in numerous other energy publications, lectured around the country and has written and conducted Webinars on Energy Monitoring.
A Registered Professional Engineer and an Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) Charter Member, he holds a BS and MS in mechanical engineering and has taken additional coursework toward his PhD in Industrial Engineering and Management with his research focused on “Using Instrumentation to Allow Industrial Plants to Manage Energy Costs Like All Other Costs.”
The Holmes AutoPilot Monitoring System - See the AutoPilot page for details.
AutoPilot can provide a complete turnkey monitoring solution including both hardware and software or
AutoPilot software can be used with virtually any energy monitoring hardware on the market or interface with existing data residing on servers or in databases.
Soon to be Released Book by Bill Holmes; Would You Fly in This Building?
Would You Fly in This Building is a personal account of Bill's experiences over more than 40 years working with energy and is filled with funny, stupid, unbelievable real-life experiences and stories. But it offers a serious look at the problems as they exist today and practical recommendations to put the Energy Conservation Industry on the right “Flight Path”.
Awards
Bill received an Award for Energy Innovation from the U.S Department of Energy (DOE) and other awards and recognition from the State of Indiana, the Association of Energy Engineers, the Journal of Energy Engineering, Ohio State University, the University of Michigan, Texas A&M and others.
In 1990, he was named the Energy Manager of The Year by the Hoosier (Indiana) Chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers.
